The Godfather – Cinematography
The Cinematographer for the Godfather and the trilogy is called Gordon Willis. The godfather up to yet is a film with famous scenes and mixture of famous shots. A good start to the cinematography is the opening scene where a character named Bonasera is speaking to Vito , and then moving to another scene where son Michael is pulling a tense , nervous face before killing two gangsters taking care of Vito’s business which is a famous closing shot that is used.
The general cinematography used in the godfather , and with the example I am going to use a one shot and with that is the use of dim colours and the use of contrast, and therefore that is used with lighting and darkness , because the Dons office is very dark and mysterious , making the characters easily fall into the shadow. Another famous way this is done is by using the light shining on the face from above which is the ceiling giving that shadowy effect upon his face making the character more serious.
The cinematography is not about how the cameras are being used in this film but the colours and light takes a huge part to its consent. The way the cinematography is explained for that scene is through various scenes of films, with the yellow dark look of the characters , also throughout there are many metaphorical images in shots.
